Triton Men’s Soccer Team Off to Perfect Start, Ranked No. 6 in the Nation

The Triton College men’s soccer team began the 2017 season unranked despite their successful history over the past decade. Now just a few weeks into the season, the Trojans have shown their might, reeling off seven straight wins out of the gate and are currently ranked No. 6 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III poll released Sept. 12.

The Trojans also sit atop the North Central Community College Conference (N4C) after key wins over Harper College, Aug. 30 (6-1), and Madison College, Sept. 18 (3-0). Both schools had received votes in the preseason poll.

“We’re off to a good start,” said sixth year head coach Piotr Sliwa. “It helps that we had 12 guys retuning from last year. So the chemistry is there and was just a matter of plugging in the freshmen. Plus we have overall good leadership on this team.”

The win on the road vs. Madison was impressive for Triton as it was their first win in the Wisconsin capital in three years. Forward Patryk Szatko scored all three Trojan goals in the victory. The freshman out of Taft High School is the leading scorer in the nation with 12 goals and five assists.

Szatko is part of what Sliwa calls “The three-headed monster” along with sophomore forwards Danny Delgado (Proviso West) and returning All-American Brandon Monteon (Proviso East). Delgado is fourth in the nation in scoring with eight goals and four assists. Monteon is 10th nationally in scoring with four goals and six assists.

“The best part about those three is how unselfish they are,” Sliwa said. “They all share the ball and it’s funny because the teams we play all know about Brandon (Monteon) and double-team him. So it opens things up for Patryk (Szatko) and Danny (Delgado). That’s why Brandon’s goal numbers are down but his assists are up from a year ago. With our speed up top it’s a matter of teams picking their poison to try and stop us.”

The Trojans next home game is Monday, Sept. 18, a rematch with Madison. A Triton victory could all but wrap up the N4C crown for the Trojans. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose field of Triton’s East Campus Athletic Complex.
